Armenia-Iran transmission line approved

The Armenian government approved an energy project to construct a new 400 kV transmission line to Iran.

Armenia, Yerevan: On November 21, the Armenian government approved an energy project to construct a new 400 kV transmission line to Iran. The project, financed through a state budget loan, will increase electricity transmission capacity between the two countries from 350 MW to 1200 MW.

The construction of the line and its accompanying substation is expected to be completed in the shortest possible timeframe. The implementation aims to enhance Armenia’s energy security and fully utilize the Iran-Armenia gas pipeline under the Gas for Electricity program. The infrastructure is set to improve the reliability and resilience of Armenia’s energy system while creating new opportunities to expand energy cooperation with Iran.

Earlier, BMG said that the construction of this line has been ongoing for several years, facing multiple challenges. Armenian officials have cited the lack of a contractor and the theft of parts of the transmission infrastructure within Armenia as key issues. The project also aims to support the development of the North-South Energy Corridor, which aims to connect the power grids of Iran, Armenia, Georgia, and Russia.
